We're on a mission from God...
Yeah, I know. 8 months since my last post. Between March and now I moved out of the house I was living in and moved into my mom's/stepdad's place, then I got a job working as an Electrical Engineer/Designer for Malibu Technologies and I moved into a townhouse in Royal Oak with my good friend, Jeff Rice.
During the time that I was at my mom's, I never once played my guitar. My room was just too small and my stepdad worked from home, so I didn't want to disturb him. Now that I'm in my own place, I've begun to play again. In fact, my college friend, Dan, got a hold of me and we started "jammin'" (I hate that term). We decided to try to get a band together and start playing out. We're gonna do cover songs and play in bars for the drunken masses. Folks, if you don't already know this, nobody wants to hear bands who play original material. There are certain places that cater to that music, but most bars want cover bands. Since Dan and I don't care about playing original material and we're having a blast playing covers, we just wanna have fun doing that. Neither one of us care about the money either. I mean, it's a bonus, but it'll just go back into the band (equipment, etc.) or into beer.
Here are some of the songs we know so far:
Jet - Cold Hard Bitch
Velvet Revolver - Slither
Toadies - Possum Kingdom
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way?
311 - Down
311 - Flowing
Stone Temple Pilots – Plush
Mountain - Mississippi Queen
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
The Strokes - Last Night
Green Day - Brain Stew
Pearl Jam - Alive
Audioslave - Show Me How to Live
I obviously play guitar and Dan plays guitar and sings. He's pretty damn good at both. Some songs where there's only one guitar part, he just sings. He plays most of the leads in the songs. I'm alright with that because I've never tried being a soloist on the guitar; I've always tried to be the rhythm player. I'd say a lot of people start playing guitar in order to solo, but that's never been of interest to me. I play the solo on Alive by Pearl Jam. It's been a small challenge to learn, but it'll be fun once it's down. We've got a list of about 50 or so songs. All of which we won't learn, but songs to be mulled over. Some of which are by Foo Fighters, Motley Crue, Oasis, The Killers, Free, The Guess Who, Aerosmith, Candlebox, Silverchair, Kid Rock, Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck, Soundgarden, and more. I think this will be really fun.
I talked to my dad about playing drums with us and he said he'd give it a shot. He knows and likes Dan because he auditioned for one of my dad's bands back in June or July. When I say he said he'd give it a shot, that really means he'll let us audition for him. My dad's probably one of the best drummers in the Detroit area and it'd be a privilege for us to have the chance to play with him. I think that our band would offer him something his other bands don't, so I think he'll stick with us. I talked to him on Friday about this, so I've been pretty pumped ever since then. RAWK!
Now we just need to get a bass player and start practicing weekly. I talked to my buddy, James, about filling the position, but he didn't seem to enthusiastic about playing covers. I don't think he really understands that you have to play what people want to hear and have fun with it. He says he's pretty busy with his current band, NeverLow to get involved in another "project". So if anyone knows of available bass players, please let me know.
